2020 Land Rover Range Rover

By KBB.com

2020 Land Rover Range RoverNoted for its luxurious appointments and impressive off-road ability, the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover luxury SUV is the pinnacle of its breed. Offered in both standard and long-wheelbase models, the 2020 Range Rover isn’t as large as a Cadillac Escalade, and it only seats five, even in LWB form. But what the Range Rover lacks in overall hauling ability it more than makes up for in status, styling and speed.

With the arrivals of the $350,000-plus Rolls-Royce Cullinan and $165,000 Bentley Bentayga, the Range Rover is no longer the most expensive thoroughbred in the British super-luxury-SUV stable, but with a starting price just under $95,000, it’s still pricier than the Lexus LX, Infiniti QX80, Lincoln Navigator and Mercedes-Benz GLS, all rivals offering 3-row seating and slightly better reliability and resale numbers.

Driving the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover

Start out on the highway and the 2020 Range Rover’s standard air suspension automatically sinks a little to improve aerodynamic efficiency. It is quiet and comfortable, while progress is swift and effortless, especially if there’s a supercharged V8 under the hood. Arrive at a remote location and the Range Rover’s terrain-response system knows what’s needed to reach the ultimate destination. The air suspension can also raise ground clearance and provide a cushioned long travel.

Back in town, the excellent outward vision, relatively tight turning circle and well-assisted steering make light work of dodging traffic and easing into parking spaces. All the time, the Range Rover feels castle-solid and spa-level luxurious (there’s even a “hot-stone” setting for the optional massaging seats). This isn’t merely a means of transportation; it’s a home away from home.

Favorite Features

With Land Rover’s adaptive Terrain Response system, even the most novice off-roader can feel like a seasoned pro. Packing years of Land Rover off-road experience into a single electronic convenience, Terrain Response offers settings for Snow, Sand, Mud or Rocks, optimizing the transmission, throttle response and air suspension to respond to each situation.

Luxury isn’t always about leather and wood. Sometimes technology takes center stage, as is the case with the Range Rover’s brilliant overhead power sunshade. Simply wave your hand backward to signal the shade to retract. The shade is even intelligent, closing automatically when the car is locked, then retracting again once the driver’s door is opened.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Interior

Covered in yards of the finest leathers meticulously matched to the perfect wood color and grain, the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover interior is a stunning example of British luxury and style. Small details like the heated center armrests and a gesture-controlled power sunshade set the Range Rover apart, as does the elegant simplicity of its high-tech cabin.

In the mix are two 10-inch infotainment touch screens, both featuring swipe and pinch-to-zoom functionality that works surprisingly well. An available head-up display is the perfect complement to the configurable 12.3-inch digital driver’s-information display. On the long-wheelbase models, available executive seating can accommodate the tallest occupants and includes both calf and foot rests.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Exterior

Overall design has evolved over the generations, but retains a lot of the original’s no-nonsense practicality, while adding an undeniable presence, sophistication and taste. The LED headlights and daytime-running lights give the 2020 Range Rover a distinctive signature. Integrated neatly into the slab sides is a crease that starts at the top of the headlights, bisects the door handles, meets the taillights and underlines the “Range Rover” badge on the clamshell tailgate. The Range Rover is also surprisingly compact for a full-size SUV — even the long-wheelbase model is only as long as a Chevy Traverse.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Standard Features

As mentioned, the 2020 Range Rover comes with an air suspension as standard, plus all-wheel drive with the terrain-response system, LED exterior lighting, gesture-controlled 2-piece tailgate, leather upholstery, tri-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, reclining rear seats, ambient cabin lighting, a pair of infotainment touch screens, and a 13-speaker/380-watt Meridian audio system. Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and a rearview camera.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Options

Higher trim levels bring more equipment. For example, the HSE version brings the panoramic moonroof, 20-inch alloy wheels, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, perforated leather upholstery and a beefier 6-cylinder engine.

Models with V8 power also have things like an upgraded terrain-response setup and 21-inch wheels. Other extras include a refrigerator, cabin air-ionization system, quad-zone climate control, more driver-assistance features, diesel power, long-wheelbase versions, 557-horsepower supercharged V8, plug-in hybrid and a 29-speaker/1,700-watt Meridian surround-sound system.

Land Rover also offers numerous accessories such as leather tailgate event seating, center console cooler/heater and personalized illuminated tread plates.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Engine

Replacing last year’s supercharged V6s is a set of inline turbocharged 6-cylinder Ingenium engines. Unique to the new 6-cylinder is a mild-hybrid system that includes a 48-volt battery capable of storing energy recaptured during deceleration. The electric boost helps improve acceleration while reducing CO2 emissions via the vehicle’s modified start/stop system.

In the base P360, this engine puts out 355 horsepower, while on the HSE P400, output is bumped up to 395 horsepower. Also available is a torque-happy diesel engine option, and an even more torque-laden P400e plug-in hybrid.

The real performance champions for the Range Rover line remain the supercharged V8s that come in 518- or 557-horsepower variations. An 8-speed automatic sending power to both front and rear axles serves the entire Range Rover line. The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover is tow-rated up to 7,716 pounds, while the plug-in hybrid model drops that figure to 5,511 pounds.

How Much Does the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Cost?

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover has a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $90,900. Add the $1,295 destination charge and the total is $92,195. A diesel engine costs $2,000 extra. Long-wheelbase versions, from $111,245, have the V8 as standard. Then it’s a climb into bigger numbers and many options. The high-luxe SVAutobiography LWB is $210,795. Somewhere in between the base model and the really expensive stuff is probably the ideal new Range Rover. Then again, as an alternative to the Bentayga or Cullinan, a top-line model might be just the ticket. It’s all relative.

However, the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class start out at lower prices. The new Lincoln Navigator is also worth cross-shopping, offering superior tow ratings and a uniquely American take on the full-size luxury SUV.
