Driving the 2020 Ford F150 Regular Cab

Opt for the base 3.3-liter V6 and you’ll end up with decent power for hauling and light towing coupled with good fuel economy. What you won’t get is an engine with the power to quickly pass, merge and blast off from a dead stop. The 5.0-liter V8 offers good power, but poor fuel economy.

If you want the right engine for such a big truck, you’re going to want to go with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 or the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 or the 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 turbodiesel. These three engines offer superior abilities when it comes to towing, hauling, fuel economy and acceleration, and they really don’t push the F-150’s price all that much higher.

As for ride and handling, you may be surprised such big trucks can be so responsive. The ride is smooth and stable, even with a loaded bed, and the F-150’s interior can be anything from comfortable cruiser to luxurious land yacht. Although its displacement isn’t much bigger than the engine in most compact cars, the F-150’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 packs quite a punch. It develops as much torque as the big V8 and can tow up to 9,000 pounds, yet its fuel economy is the best of all the F-150’s gasoline engines.

The base-model F-150 is a regular-cab, 2-wheel-drive (2WD) XL, which comes with enough standard equipment that makes it possible to buy a decent truck to get work done at a reasonable price. Even trucks equipped with the 3.3-liter base engine and 6-speed automatic transmission come standard with auto start/stop, and all F-150s get the same ultra-strong hydroformed, fully boxed frame. Hill-start assist and Trailer Sway Control are standard, as are Curve Control, 17-inch wheels and air conditioning. Move to the Lariat trim and you’ll find Ford’s Co-Pilot360 standard.

2020 Ford F150 Regular Cab Options

There are plenty of appealing upscale trim levels, including the King Ranch, Platinum and Limited. Available options make the interior luxury plush, such as heated leather front and rear seats (10-way-power, cooled and massaging front seats), Sync 3 and Bang & Olufsen Play or Sony audio systems. A variety of towing assist and safety systems is offered, as are adaptive cruise control and side steps that deploy when a door is opened and retract when the door closes. On the safety front, the 2020 Ford F-150 is offered with inflatable rear seatbelts and a blind-spot information system. Four-wheel drive (4WD) is available.

2020 Ford F150 Regular Cab Engine

The 2020 Ford F-150 offers a choice of six engines, including a potent high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. The base engine is a 290-horsepower, 3.3-liter V6 — more powerful and more efficient than previous Ford V6s — and the only one in the line with a 6-speed automatic.

The rest use a 10-speed automatic, including the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, with 400 lb-ft of torque and the best fuel economy of all the gas engines. The 5.0-liter V8 remains the same this year, as does the standard 3.5-liter EcoBoost. The 3.0-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel offers 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, while the Limited and Raptor come with the 450-horsepower High Output 3.5-liter EcoBoost, both models capable of towing up to 13,200 pounds with the optional tow package.

How Much Does the 2020 Ford F150 Regular Cab Cost?

For 2020, the Ford F-150 Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starts at just over $30,000 for a regular-cab XL (all prices include $1,595 destination). XLT pricing begins at $36,105. The Lariat starts at nearly $44,600, which sounds like a bigger price jump than it actually is, because every model above the XLT comes as a SuperCab (extended cab) or larger, while the XL and XLT prices are for regular cabs. The Raptor starts close to $55,000, the King Ranch at nearly $54,500 and the Platinum close to $56,900.

Pricing is comparable to trucks like the Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado, but as is the case with many full-size trucks, F-150s can get pricey. The top-line Limited starts around $69,000 and with every option it can approach $75,000. As far as resale value goes, the 2020 Ford F-150 holds its own among its competitors, with the Toyota Tundra being the standard-bearer of the bunch.
