2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

By KBB.com

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup truck is now in the second year of a fresh generation. It provides another choice in the half-ton-truck segment to buyers who are spoiled by years of superb machines from America’s Big Three, plus some keen competition from the Texas-built Toyota Tundra and Tennessee-built Nissan Titan.

This kind of vehicle is usually a best-seller for Chevy, Dodge and Ford, so these companies naturally inject huge amounts of research and development, plus a lot of value, to keep each model relevant and alluring.

The Silverado deploys technology and smart engineering to make it lighter, more fuel efficient and roomier than its predecessor. It’s a strong and reliable performer with a broad range of abilities, while spanning from utilitarian Work Truck to high-class High Country trim levels.

Any buyer seeking a new full-size truck should absolutely investigate the 2020 Silverado.

Driving the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

The 5.3-liter V8 has plenty of power, while the standard transmission is quick in its responses. Another plus is that it’s virtually impossible to tell when the fuel-management system is working. The 6.2-liter V8 has a rumbling exhaust to accompany its extra power, but the difference between this and the smaller V8 is not dramatic. It’s a nice option, but unless anyone needs to tow more than 11,600 pounds, the 5.3 is perfectly adequate.

The 2020 Silverado drives smaller than it is, with excellent ride quality, yet the handling is still taut and accurate with little body roll. From steering to braking, everything feels natural and linear. The Silverado had already earned a reputation for its quiet cabins; as far as we can tell, this new generation is even quieter.

Favorite Features

Chevy supplies a useful checklist for connecting a trailer, plus memory settings for five trailer profiles. The driver can monitor the trailer tires’ pressures and even test the trailer lights (usually a 2-person job) through a smartphone app. An optional rear camera shows what’s behind the trailer; the 2020 Silverado revision brings 15 views. In addition, an alarm sounds if the trailer is disconnected while the truck is locked.

One more great thing about the 2020 Silverado is that it isn’t necessary to splash out for the 6.2-liter V8 to acquire this gem of a transmission -- whose quick, smooth shifts make driving this Chevy truck especially satisfying. It’s now available with the smaller V8 in the LT Trail Boss and High Country variants.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Interior

On the positive side, the 2020 Silverado’s cabins are tranquil, roomy and comfortable, with plenty of handy stowage spaces, including under the rear seats (where fitted). We also like the flat floor in the crew cab’s second row. The interior design is best described as conservative, but that can also be seen as an asset.

On the negative side, there’s no power-tilt/telescoping steering-wheel adjustment in any trim level, and the largest infotainment display available is an 8-inch touch screen. While there are many advanced safety systems, the blind-spot monitoring system doesn’t stretch to vehicles in a trailer’s blind spots.

Some 2020 Silverado trim levels sport lavish amounts of chrome, while others lean more toward retaining the body color. At least buyers have a choice. The lower trims also have “Chevrolet” stamped in the center bar, the higher levels have Chevy’s bow-tie badge in the center of the grille. The Trail Boss versions sit on lifted suspensions, while their black-finished wheels and door handles provide a little extra attitude.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Standard Features

The Work Truck is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado’s base model, employing a 4.3-liter V6, 6-speed automatic transmission, 4-wheel disc brakes, and 17-inch painted steel wheels. Buyers can choose either a vinyl or cloth 40/20/40-split/fold bench seat.

Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 system is standard, operated through a 7-inch touch screen. Bluetooth is also included, as is Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, plus a 6-speaker audio system, one USB port and a 12-volt outlet.

The beds come with 12 cargo tie-downs, while the rear bumpers have CornerSteps. Buyers can then add more equipment and different drivetrains by ascending the trim levels.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Options

Remote keyless entry, rear-window defogger, cruise control and power mirrors are optional in the Work Truck, as is a spray-on bedliner. The more interesting extras are a Z71 off-road package, head-up display, wireless device charging, power tailgate, 360-degree camera system, leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats/steering wheel/side mirrors, Bose audio upgrade, and alloy wheels up to 22 inches in diameter.

The Trail Boss includes a 2-inch suspension lift, locking rear differential, skidplates, off-road tires and Rancho shocks. Then there are the choices of the 6.2 V8 and the 10-speed automatic transmission. Trailer tech, which includes the auxiliary-trailer camera, is also available.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Engine

A new diesel engine joins the 2020 Silverado range. It’s a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 making an impressive 460 lb-ft of torque that peaks at low revs (1,500 rpm), which is an ideal characteristic for towing and off-roading. It pairs with the 10-speed automatic transmission. The tow rating for this engine is 9,300 pounds.

The base engine is a 4.3-liter V6, with a 5.3-liter V8 available in some variants (linked to a 6-, 8- or 10-speed auto), and a turbocharged 2.7-liter 4-cylinder unit offered in others. The top engine is a 6.2-liter V8, which is now standard in the LT Trail Boss and optional in the High Country.

Two types of cylinder-management systems optimize fuel consumption. Active Fuel Economy is the simpler cylinder shut-off system; Dynamic Fuel Management is designed to fine-tune the balance between efficiency and power demand, allowing the engine to operate between two and eight cylinders, within 17 different patterns.

Most variants have rear-wheel drive (RWD) as their default setup, with all-wheel drive (AWD) available from the options list.

How Much Does the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Cost?

The rear-drive 2020 Chevrolet Silverado Work Truck kicks off with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $28,300. Add the $1,595 destination charge and we’re looking at $29,895. This configuration includes the regular cab and the 8-foot bed.

All-wheel drive is another $4,600. At the other end of the pricing arc is the crew-cab-only/standard-bed/all-wheel-drive version of the High Country at $58,395 before options. Fully loaded, this model’s final tally can close in on $70,000.

The Work Truck is offered only as a regular cab; the rest (except the High Country) are available as double cabs or crew cabs. The lineup also includes the Custom ($36,195), Custom Trail Boss ($41,095), LT ($38,495), LT Trail Boss ($47,695), RST ($40,395) and LTZ ($44,595). Buyers seeking many of the same features as the High Country but aren’t so interested in that truck’s model-specific interior should investigate an LTZ, which starts at $46,995 for the crew-cab version.

All these figures are comparable with the competition. Resale values are expected to remain strong, since the previous generation did well in this respect.
