The Dual-Ghia, made in extremely limited quantities by Dual Motors Corporation of Detroit, is in many ways the first in a storied line of Italian-American hybrid automobiles. The DeTomasos and Iso Grifos that would become icons of the 1960s owe their existence to this first sublime marriage of Italian coachwork and American power and practicality.
In 1956, Dual Motors entered into a partnership with Carrozzeria Ghia of Turin. Known for their fabulous craftsmanship and outlandish concept cars, Ghia was at the top of its game during the true golden era of Italian coachbuilding. For the Dual-Ghia, they created a stylistic masterpiece that blends period 1950’s touches with timeless elegance. Even 60 years later, the understated fins and careful use of brightwork highlight the grace and sophistication of Italian design. Inside, the luxurious interior of the Dual-Ghia was trimmed in the finest Connolly leather and accented by brushed metal and restrained touches of chrome.
Under the stunning bodywork, Dual Motors underpinned their creation with a Mopar frame and running gear. Though the 230-hp “Firebomb” V8 was standard, most Dual-Ghias, including this example, featured the legendary 331-CID Hemi V8. With 260-hp channeled through a powerflite automatic transmission, the Dual-Ghia sprinted to 60 mph in just 8.2 seconds on its way to a then-astonishing 124mph top speed.
Rarer, more expensive and much more exotic than a Cadillac, Lincoln or Imperial, the Dual-Ghia was truly the super-car of its day. As such, the list of original owners reads like a who’s who of the period’s Hollywood elite. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra were both devoted fans, as were Peter Lawford, Lucille Ball and Eddie Fisher. The car became an icon in the entertainment world, with actor Ronald Reagan even losing his in a high-profile poker game against then President Lyndon Johnson!
This is one of 117 Dual-Ghias ever built and one of fewer than 30 thought to exist today. Its impeccable provenance includes a stint on the lawn at Pebble Beach in 2010 and a turn as the featured car at the 2011 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance. Immaculately restored and accompanied by extensive period documentation, this Dual-Ghia represents the pinnacle of Italian style and American engineering.
